In the article published by the New York Times on May 28th 2008, more than 10,000 students from public school were killed in the 7.9 earthquake on May 12th 2008 in Sichuan Province. A staggering number of enraged parents gathered to demand an investigation regarding the quality of public school buildings. Some parents stated that province officials have known that the schools were unsafe but didn’t do anything for years. This is what happened when authorities swept important issues under the rug.
People in China might be more cautious when demanding something from the government. However, when parents lost their child due to government’s neglect in inspecting the school’s quality, rage over-empowered cautions and fear.
I think these parents have the right to be enraged and demanding. We, the parents, tried so hard to keep our children in school because we believe that it’s a safe environment for them to grow. I have heard many times that children are the future, so why is it that the government in China took the safety of these children so lightly? Does this kind of corruption only happen in China? What can you do to prevent this? Regular inspection? What if the contractor brides the inspector too?
Do you think this kind of corruption happen in America’s public schools? Give me your thoughts.
